Aquebogue

The Indian word Aquebogue, translated to mean "end of the water place" or "head of the bay" was the name given for entire area called the Aquebogue Purchase, acquired by the Town of Southold from the Indians between 1648-1649. The village of Aquebogue was settled around 1758 as the first church of this once divided town known as Lower Aquebogue and Upper Aquebogue was built. In 1886, the Riverhead News stated that a man named James M. Magee was appointed Postmaster of Aquebogue. From that time on, Lower and Upper Aquebogue were simply known as Aquebogue.

Today, Aquebogue is known for its wineries and farm stands.
